For Schools & Educators
Years 1 – VCEThe Unstitch Learn Program
Imagine tactile, hands-on building with interlocking textile that students can join, build, take apart and rapid prototype without sewing or stitching. Most importantly, transforming what was considered waste into building blocks with endless possibilities.
We'll present accessible and innovative creative solutions to reducing waste towards a circular economy. Below are three ways schools collaborate with Unstitch.
Three ways to collaborate with Unstitch
Every program runs from Years 1 through VCE; the brief and difficulty can be tailored to your requested year level, group size and session length. Depending on your needs, the physical workshop component can scale to construct small, handheld objects for younger students or shorter sessions, to larger spatial pieces that encourage teams to communicate and build together.
Experience Lab
Open-ended, guided making with the tile system.
An introductory taste of Unstitch for all ages.
Curriculum Skill
A short presentation plus facilitated making with briefs tailored to a subject.
Also available as a half-day or full-day session.
Fireside Talk
A talk on career pathway in circular economy, systems thinking in engineering and design, entrepreneurial building tangible business from idea.
DetailsUnstitch Experience Lab
An open-ended, guided making workshop where students explore how interlocking textile modules can be used to construct physical forms.
Learning outcomes
- Explore how interlocking mechanisms can create structures without glue.
- Develop spatial reasoning through constructing and transforming 2D shapes into 3D structures.
- Experiment with physical and virtual prototyping.
- Reflect on alternative ways of designing and making with textiles.
Delivery requirements
- Indoor classroom with tables.
- Projector or suitable screen for virtual making.
- Reusable tile sets and agreed workshop resources supplied by Unstitch.
- School staff support for student supervision where required.
Schools can enquire about availability, group sizes and adapting the activity to themes such as fast fashion, circular economy, architecture or STEAM.
Unstitch Curriculum Skill
A curriculum-tailored workshop through the lens of Systems, STEAM or Identity. Delivered through a short presentation and a guided making session where students use interlocking mechanisms and circular design thinking to respond to real-world scenarios.
Session length
The 90-minute session above is the standard format. For a deep dive, this program can also run as a half-day or full-day session:
Choose a subject track
Content and framing shift with the subject. Six tracks are currently offered:
Sustainable Lifecycles & Circular Economy
Students learn circular economy principles by visiting global traditional packaging techniques, then prototype reimagined 3D packaging without glue.
Tactile STEAM & Geometry
Students explore structural thinking and spatial reasoning using tactile geometry, symmetry, pattern and tessellation to transform 2D flat tiles into 3D structures.
Community Eco-Emblem
Students collaborate, design, prototype and pitch simplified, abstract emblems that physically represent the school's values that becomes a permanent school asset.
Architectural Systems in Spaces
Students construct interior spatial elements, acoustic wall paneling, or architectural models using the tile system.
Interactive E-Textiles & Wearable Tech
Students rapid prototype a smart garment or an interactive soft sculpture that reacts to light, touch or sound with simple open-source hardware such as micro:bits or conductive thread.
*Currently only available to schools with electronic kits.
Textile Animation
Students direct and build creative storytelling through tactile frame-by-frame animation.
Fireside Talk
A talk covering Unstitch team's entrepreneurial experience in building accessible solutions and problem solving towards a more sustainable world. Format and length are arranged directly with the school.
Topics can include
- Career pathway: finding direction and identifying a professional profile
- The problem of material waste and its opportunity
- Turning an idea into something tangible.
- The reality of entrepreneurship for students considering the same paths.
- Useful lessons from engineering, industrial design, finance, people and curiosity
